Microtiming deviations in groove

چکیده
Metrical music is commonly perceived assegmented into phrases at durations above the levelof the tactus, up to temporal intervals ofapproximately 3 secs. These segments are normallycontiguous and non-overlapping. Examples ofsimilar temporal segmentation are found in humanutterances and in human mother-infant interactions.Standard reference beat patterns such as the Cubanclave and African bell patterns are in this order ofduration, and have rotation symmetry only at thelevel of the whole pattern. The start point of thepatterns is either musically inherent or culturallyunderstood. Various researchers have found theexistence of musically meaningful deviations of lessthan 60ms from quantised rhythm, a level of timingcontrol not possible through closed-loopkinaesthetic feedback control, which has a cycletime in the order of 100ms. I propose that referencebeat patterns provide a guide to performers in agroup as to the start point of a recurring open-looptiming control interval.

The Effect of Expert Performance Microtiming on Listeners' Experience of Groove in Swing or Funk Music
This study tested the influence of expert performance microtiming on listeners' experience of groove. Two professional rhythm section performances (bass/drums) in swing and funk style were recorded, and the performances' original microtemporal deviations from a regular metronomic grid were scaled to several levels of magnitude. Music expert (n = 79) and non-expert (n = 81) listeners rated the g...
متن کاملRhythmic Density Affects Listeners' Emotional Response to Microtiming
Microtiming has been assumed to be vital for the experience of groove, but past research presented conflicting results: some studies found that microtiming is irrelevant for groove, others reported that microtiming has a detrimental effect on the groove experience, yet others described circumstances under which microtiming has no negative impact on groove. The three studies in this paper aim at...

متن کاملModeling the tendency for music to induce movement in humans: first correlations with low-level audio descriptors across music genres.
Groove is often described as the experience of music that makes people tap their feet and want to dance. A high degree of consistency in ratings of groove across listeners indicates that physical properties of the sound signal contribute to groove (Madison, 2006). Here, correlations were assessed between listeners' ratings and a number of quantitative descriptors of rhythmic properties for one ...
متن کاملMicrotiming in “Samba de Roda” —Preliminary experiments with polyphonic audio
In this paper we report on preliminary experiments in the study of microtiming features in Samba music. Focusing on polyphonic audio music with almost constant tempo, we propose an algorithm to discover from data in a bottom-up manner systematic timing deviations at the 16th-note level in quarternote-long temporal patterns. Our analysis of the data highlights a systematic shift of third and fou...
متن کاملCorrelated microtiming deviations in jazz and rock music
Musical rhythms performed by humans typically show temporal fluctuations. While they have been characterized in simple rhythmic tasks, it is an open question what is the nature of temporal fluctuations, when several musicians perform music jointly in all its natural complexity. To study such fluctuations in over 100 original jazz and rock/pop recordings played with and without metronome we deve...
